Tonight we have the distinct privilege of presenting the tour kickoff for our friends Krist and Sarah in East Nashville for what will surely be the most ‘punk’ Cause A Scene show to date. We’ve been big fans of their music for some time now and can’t wait to see what they have in store for us tonight. Come out to The Owl Farm (811 Dickerson, Unit 1, Nashville, TN 37027) for the show. Music starts at 8:00. The show is free, but we encourage a $5-$10 donation to help the artists as they begin their tour. Hope to see you all there!
Krist (Yards) and Sarah (Gardening, Not Architecture) have been friends for over a decade, first working together to host and promote shows in Madison, WI. Over the years, they have collaborated as both entrepreneurs and musicians, working together through their organizations Self Group and Earn It Yourself, as well as touring together with their various musical projects.
In 2012, as the world is coming to an end, they have decided to reunite one last time to tour their old midwestern stomping grounds, and visit the east coast once more before the Apocalypse. Both strong proponents of the do-it-yourself philosophy, Krist and Sarah have decided to co-book the tour themselves, focusing on house shows and smaller, DIY spaces.

“A cauldron of methodical yet deeply moving instrumental rock that combines forlorn piano motifs with gradually intensifying, swirling drones and portentous orchestral swells.” writes the Seattle Stranger of the release that initially spurred Yards, Southerly’s “Champion of The Noisy Negativists”. Though not entirely instrumental, Yards directs its focus on a wider range of compositional concepts. Creating in one track what could be a dark contrasting club hit to a simplistic conceptual piece based on select subject matter.

Hello faithful Cause A Scene readers! Thank you so much for your patience as the updates have been incredibly sparse the past couple weeks. I wish I could blame it on SxSW preparations and whatnot but sadly that was not the case this time around as I was unable to find the time to make it to Austin this week. 99% sure I will be there next year, with bells on no less.
The past couple weeks have consisted of two absolutely incredible house shows put on by Neulore and Dinner And A Suit the last weekend in February followed up by The Vespers and Anderson East this past Saturday, three mesmerizing performances from Mumford & Sons at Nashville’s hallowed Ryman Auditorium, and yet another showstopping concert from Philadelphia rockers, Dr. Dog to boot. Also have been going through the rigors of a two month job search that is culminating with a possible dream job in tow (Cue giant ear-to-ear smile and me doing backflips). More on all of those things to come. Finally, there are going to be a LOT of house shows to announce very shortly for the spring whose final details are being nailed down at the moment.
So thank you again for bearing with me as I try to find the time to metaphorically put pen to paper for Cause A Scene. There are a lot of posts coming, it’s just a matter of finding the time to produce them.

Well, it’s finally here – the blog I’ve talked about for eons it seems like, the website I made up excuses to why I shouldn’t start it. For years, music has been more than a simple hobby in my life, more like an never-able-to-be-quenched thirst to discover the good in it all. I’ve shared countless artists with friends at any opportunity that presented itself, and now it’s time to share those incredible musicians with all of you wonderful people out there.
It’s time for all the bands playing on a loop inside my head to have a grander audience, and that is much of what this blog will be about: bringing to light those authentic artists that may be hovering right below the radar. I hope you come to enjoy the bands on here as much as I do.
So why ‘Cause A Scene’ and why NOW? Well, the title has a few different facets to it, but much of it points back to a song that will forever rank up there as one of my favorites: The Format‘s ‘The First Single (Cause A Scene)’ (They are known as fun. now in case you’re keeping track at home). I distinctly remember seeing them open for Switchfoot and The Honorary Title in the grand Wright Center on the campus of my alma mater as a sophomore in college. At the time they were just a nascent band with a recently debuted LP out and I have my doubts that more than 2 other people in the packed out 2,600+ seat auditorium knew of them. But there I was, in the nosebleed section, singing each word to every song at the top of my lungs, using the seats in front of me as drums and stomping my feet as though the band desperately needed me to help keep them on time. It is no wonder that my fraternity brothers and I moved down to the first floor shortly thereafter, inevitably pleasing the patrons around us who were more than likely perturbed by my exuberance for the opening band.
All that to say: there are those bands, those songs even, that you come across that take you to a place that seems almost otherworldly, and The Format’s lead track has done that for me every time I’ve heard it. And if we’re being honest, we all have those songs that have that same unexplainable effect on us. So Cause A Scene, in many ways, is an attempt to champion those artists that make me (and hopefully you, too) come alive and believe in the transcending quality of music.
