Archives For Cause A Scene

CAS July 11 - Matthew Mayfield

The heat is kickin’ into full swing this summer, and what better way to spend a hot and sticky Tennessee night than with good tunes in an intimate setting at a Cause A Scene house show? Start your weekend early this Thursday, with a stripped down set of music from three talented and seasoned musicians. Matthew Mayfield has been playing rock n’ roll music since he received his first guitar at age 11, and through the years his music has gone through several realms of metamorphosis. resulting in his most recent EP, Irons In The Fire. The product of the record reflects a culmination of anthemic rock and stripped down lyricism and presents the Birmingham, AL native in his most raw of forms. Duquette Johnston will also be filling the evening with heavenly melodies. This fellow Alabamian’s americana/soul sound has shared the stage with the likes of Pavement, Foo Fighters and The Strokes. Johnston released his most recent album, Rabbit Runs A Destiny, just this passed May. Filling out the evening’s set is Nashville transplant Jameson Elder. His EP, The Home I’ve Never Known, is a well crafted blend of acoustic ballads and roots rock.

This wonderful night of music will be kicking off at 5008 Longstreet Drive at 7:00 PM. Doors open at 6:30. Get your tickets here for $12.

CAS July 7 - Anderson East

Come close out your 4th of July weekend with the Cause A Scene crew at the first house show of the month, back at good ol’ 5008 Longstreet Drive. The night will be filled with a wide range of music spanning from the Americana/soul sounds of Athens, AL native, Anderson East, to the brother/sister duo, originally from Lexington, KY, The Breedings, who are bringing back old school country and classic rock n’ roll, creating a refreshing, hybrid concoction. Both artists are Nashville transplants and both are on opposite ends of the touring and creative spectrum. Anderson East has spent the last several months touring and promoting his 2-disc concept album, Flowers of the Broken Hearted, which released last fall, while The Breedings have spent the better part of a year writing and recording their sophomore record, Fayette, due out soon.

The evening will also include the angelic voice of Odessa Rose and the folk stylings of singer-songwriter and Nashville native Austin Manuel, who is also fresh of the release of his 12-track album, Through The Night, that he finished this spring.

You can purchase tickets here for $7 in advance and $10 DOS. Doors at 7:00 PM. Show starts at 7:30 PM.

If you are anything like myself or any other red-blooded American music lover, and often find yourself trying not to sweat to death on a hot and sticky summer afternoon in the south, nothing helps beat the heat better than a cold brew and some live music. That was the idea when I ventured down to Nashville’s Centennial Park this last weekend to the outdoor concert series, Musicians Corner. I was not expecting however, to be completely blown away by St. Paul and the Broken Bones. I had already heard several tracks from the band, but from the moment front man Paul Janeway and his band took the stage and he let those first notes wail from his southern loins, their presence was instantaneously as large as the sound on their record. Only two songs and multiple hip gyrations in, Janeway’s suit was already soaked in sweat and all I could think to myself was “when are these guys coming back?”

Front man Paul Janeway and his aptly dubbed ‘Broken Bones’ are a six piece band out of Birmingham, AL, that do nothing short of sweet justice to the term “soul.” Propelled by a horn section, tightly wound rhythms and their most distinctive instrument, Janeway’s voice, St. Paul and the Broken Bones deliver a sound that is as thick as the southern heat. The band has spent the first half of the year traveling across the country, and cutting a four song EP with fellow southerner and musician, Ben Tanner, keyboardist for the Alabama Shakes. You can listen to and purchase the EP, Greeting From St. Paul and the Broken Bones, on their BandCamp page.

Below you can watch their Music City Roots performance of “Broken Bones and Pocket Change,” my favorite track on their EP.

Big Black Delta is the solo project of Venezuelan native, now Los Angeles transplant, Jonathan Bates. Bates, once the front man for Los Angeles indie rock band Mellowdrone and touring musician for M83, began his solo efforts in 2010. His self-titled debut album, which released this passed April, is nearly a perfect brainchild of 80’s synth-pop and modern indie. Add the vocoder on his vocals and you have a sound that drifts in and out between a haunting dream and a John Hughes flick.

Currently in the middle of a two-month long North American tour, with appearances at Leads and Reading festivals in August, as well as garnering press from the likes of Pitchfork and Spin, Big Black Delta is an artist to keep a keen eye on.

You can find BBD’s full album on iTunes, and several of the record’s tracks are on SoundCloud. But for now, take a gander at the video for Big Black Delta’s single, “Side of the Road.”

From St. Louis, MO, Pretty Little Empire could best be described as an americana folk rock band, but since they began playing together in the fall of 2008, they have cultivated a sound that has revealed a complexity and maturity that extends beyond typical genre parameters. Since forming the band in the fall of 2008, they have recorded two full-length albums. Their second and most recent full-length album, Reasons and Rooms garnered the band a good bit of local attention. They have spent the last couple of years touring across the midwest, east coast and beyond, and are currently working on recording their third full-length album.

Check out their song, Something More below. If you like what you hear, you can listen to the Pretty Little Empire’s entire second album, Reasons and Rooms at their Bandcamp page.
