CAS September 25 - Kate Tucker

Fall is officially in the air. With the chill of the southern Autumn lingering in the distance, what better way to bring in the forthcoming season sure to be full of bonfires, football and pots of chili than with your pals at Cause A Scene and another night chocked full with great music? Join us this Wednesday evening on the east side of the Cumberland at Mad Donna’s Music Loft for three fantastic pop-rock acts, all three of which are Nashville transplants.

Fronting the evening’s lineup is the indie rock outfit, Kate Tucker and the Sons of Sweden. Originally formed in Seattle, WA in the winter of 2007, where the band recorded their self-titled debut album. Their single from the album went on to top the blog charts and received heavy rotation on Starbucks in-store playlists. Songs from the album have continued to be featured in several television shows and independent films. In the years following, the band disbanded to follow different pursuits. It wasn’t until 2012 after relocating to Nashville that Kate Tucker, along with original member Nic Danielson, decided to pick up the Sons of Sweden project again. The rejuvenated Sons of Sweden consists of new recruits Wes Chandler (guitars), Ethan Place (drums), and Matthew Thompson (bass), with Tucker at the helm, and together they are now hard at work on the band’s long awaited follow up album. Kate Tucker and the Sons just reached their Kickstarter goal this summer, in efforts to help fund the new record, officially titled The Shape, The Color, The Feel, as well as a series of short films surrounding the project. The band also released Long View, a song sampler exclusively available on Noisetrade, which includes songs from their forthcoming album along with live versions of previously released tracks. Kate Tucker and the Sons of Sweden hope to release their sophomore effort at the end of this year.

Also on the bill for the evening is alt-pop act Trenton and electro pop duo Brotherun. Originally formed in Hudson, FL by singer/songwriter Ryan Courtney, with the purpose of being a collaborative band effort, Trenton gradually developed into Courtney’s solo project. Now located in Nashville, Courtney has spent the better part of the last two years writing, recording and producing his recent EP release Dreamers. Trenton is slated for an acoustic set this Wednesday.

Originally from Arizona, Brotherun is the first collaborative effort of brothers Nick and Trevor Tillery. The project was formed in the brother’s early adult years by email correspondence, despite growing up in the same household. Now located in Music City, Brotherun is fresh off the release of their debut, self-titled EP, which dropped earlier this year. Armed with their own unique brand of indie-pop, Brotherun is quickly beginning to stand out in Nashville’s already eclectic music scene.

Don’t miss out on another night of great CAS music! Doors open at 7:00 PM and the show starts at 8:00 PM at Mad Donna’s Music Loft in East Nashville. Tickets are $5 at the door.

everest cale

Based in Brooklyn, NY, Everest Cale is a band that is making long strides within, whilst pushing the limits of the indie rock genre. Swelling guitars, anthemic climaxes, and narrative lyricism are just a handful of the key traits that give this band their distinctive and lingering identity. Meeting in South Carolina nearly ten years ago, college friends Brett Treacy (vocals, guitar), Jeremy Kolmin (guitar) and Aaron Nystrup (bass) have bounced in and out of each others’ lives but have always found themselves reunited by their love of music. It is this shared calling that eventually led the trio to New York, where with the addition of drummer Nate Becker, Everest Cale was formed in 2010.

In the time since, the quartet have constructed a unique sound that draws from classic rock and explores the reaches of experimental indie, and is rooted in Treacy’s songwriting. The band released their first EP, Beast in 2012 and has developed a strong fan following in New York and around the US, playing alongside a number of rising indie acts, such as Radiation City, who played a Cause A Scene show earlier this summer.

Everest Cale has spent the last year hard at work on the material for their new EP, Constellation Choir, due out October 22nd. “Fossils,” the first single from their sophomore effort, released just last month and if it is any indication of the direction that this band is heading in, I for one can’t wait to hear what is next. The band already has plans to head back into the studio before the end of this year in hopes of a third EP release in Spring of 2014. With what appears to be no limit of creative inspiration and a sound that often explodes with passion and heart, Everest Cale is a band you will want to keep a sharp eye on.

CAS September 14 - Gabriel Kelley - Web

Join us this Saturday night for some stripped down folk tunes for our first show ever at The Edgehill Cafe. Headlining the evening is Nashville-based folk singer songwriter, Gabriel Kelley. Kelley’s music is rooted in the experiences of his “life’s journey” that span from his childhood, growing up on a farm just outside Athens, GA, to his adolescence abroad in Sweden and his early adult years in which he traveled his traveled across the country in his Astro van with only his music in exchange for food and shelter. In his early twenties, his developed writing chops landed him a gig in Nashville as a staff writer for a country music publishing company. Despite the material gains that the job provided it caused a rift in Kelley’s creative spirit. He eventually left Nashville and the staff writing position on Music Row and once again set off on the open road. It was in this time that he immersed himself in his songwriting, dwelling on his own life experiences to write the songs for his first album, It Don’t Come Easy. “I waited six years to make my first album,” Kelley says of his 10 track album, which released last year. The statement draws reference to the meticulous and personal nature of each song, as well as the recording process in which he collaborated with engineer/producer, who engineered Alison Krauss’ 2011 album Paper Airplane, for which he won a Grammy, as well as several other revered talents in the industry. Kelley is currently spending his time and effort doing what he loves most, writing and playing music. He is currently touring while also working on his sophomore effort, Lighter Shades of Blue. You can help Kelley bring his second album to fruition by visiting his Kickstarter page here.

Playing alongside Gabriel Kelley this Saturday night are Nashville natives Mercy Child and Kentucky boy Stephen Gordon. Mercy Child is the collaboration project of three close friends, Erika Chambers (vocals, lyrics), Kyle Aaron (vocals, fiddle, mandolin, guitar) and Madeline Lewis (lyrics, vocals, guitar). This newly formed trio’s musical identity is rooted in the sounds of folk and Americana music and is characterized by characterized by tight, three-part harmonies, emotive lyrical imagery and dynamic fiddle and mandolin solos. Mercy Child’s video for their first single, “Closer” released just last month and the band’s debut EP is expected out this fall. Bowling Green, KY native Stephen is and indie-folk singer songwriter who has been perfecting his craft for over ten years, drawing influence from artists such as; Ryan Adams, Frank Sinatra, and Josh Ritter. In the time he has been making music, Gordon has written and released one full-length album and two EP’s, the most recent of which, Out of the Jar, released last year.

Capping off the evening’s lineup is Boston, MA-based folk songstress, Annalise Emerick. Emerick writes songs that resonate deeply with a wide audience, as demonstrated from the release of her acclaimed 7-track debut EP, Starry-Eyed in 2011, which debuted on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter chart at #9 its first day. She began her “Somewhere in Between” tour this year and has continued raking in the awards, earning first prize in the 2013 New England Songwriting Competition and second place in the 2013 Solarfest singer/songwriter competition. Needless to say, we are excited that she is making a stopover in Nashville to play with CAS this weekend.

Don’t miss out on a lineup chocked full of talent and beautiful music at 1201 Villa Place this Saturday. Doors are at 7:00 PM and the music starts at 7:30 PM. Headlining the evening is band that has a lot of history with Cause A Scene. Dinner and a Suit are a Nashville-based pop rock-band that just so happened to play the first ever CAS bill back in early 2012, so we mean it when we say we are thrilled to welcome them back to the CAS stage. Guitarists, vocalists and cousins Jonathan Capeci and Joey Beretta began writing music together in New Jersey in 2008, laying the framework for what would quickly become Dinner and a Suit. With the addition of bassist and friend Anthony Genca, the band recorded their first album Light And Lungs later that year. In the years since the band has relocated to Nashville and one full-length album and two EPs later the band has developed a devout fan base and carved a name for themselves in the music world, earning multiple mentions from MTV and mtvU. Following the release of their most recent EP, Too Late, Dinner and a Suit is currently touring, making several stops across the greater US.

CAS September 11 - Vickie Vaughn

Come on out for some good ol’ Cause A Scene fun this Wednesday at what is becoming one of our favorite venues in town, The Basement. The evenings bill is full of acts both local and from afar who dwell deep in the bluegrass and Americana genres. The Vickie Vaughn Band are a quintet based out of Music City, complete with a banjo, fiddle and mandolin, who are sure to get the crowd stomping on this September evening. This group is comprised of five incredibly talented and dedicated musicians who have worked to form a sound that is self-described as “a unique brand of Bluegrass that blends tradition with youthful funk and energy.”

Filling out the set and keeping the air rich with the sounds of country and folk music, are two more Nashville-based acts; Johnny Appleseed and Cale Tyson. Johnny Appleseed are a seven piece who’s unique sound is rooted in country but characterized with a contemporary flair. We were fortunate enough have Johnny Appleseed play our Christmas show last year and we are stoked to have them back for a second run. Originally from Fort Worth, TX, Cale Tyson brings the grit and somberness found in old school country to the table. It would only make sense that this singer-songwriter would find his way to Nashville, where he cut his latest EP, High On Lonesome. Released less than two months ago, High On Lonesome was featured on American Songwriter. You can read the full article here.

Opening up the evening is the St. Louis, MO-based outfit, Jack Grelle and the Johnson Family Band. With their most recent full-length album, Jack Grelle and the Johnson Family out in November of last year, this group of Missourians will certainly be the perfect cap on a fantastic lineup of talent.

So get yourself down to The Basement on 8th Avenue South to see some of the best music this city has to offer. Doors open at 8:00 PM and the show starts at 9:00 PM. Tickets are $5 at the door.
