Archives For Cause A Scene

COIN

We at Cause A Scene are ecstatic to bring you our first show at one of our favorite venues in town, Mercy Lounge, this Sunday evening and we are doing so with a lineup that will have you jumping and dancing deep into the night. Headlining the bill is indie-pop band, COIN, who have long been a Cause A Scene favorite. The Nashville-based quartet released their newest album, 1992, earlier this summer, and is drawing significant buzz both locally and across the wide spanning indie circuit. Recently having sold out their CD release show at 12th & Porter and having opened for Paper Route and Halfnoise at Exit/In, trust us when we say that these guys are the real deal.

Adding significant depth to the evening’s bill, we are excited to welcome back Cause A Scene alums The Young International and Phin, and CAS newcomers, Canopy Climbers. Alt-rock quartet The Young International’s new singles, “More of the Same” and “Vampire,” which released earlier this year, are the most recent product of one of Nashville’s most promising rising talents. Canopy Climbers are a trio formed in Arkansas that now, separated by distance, continue to write and record with the help of technology. Continually developing a sound that drifts somewhere between indie-rock and pop, the band released their sophomore effort, Miles, earlier this summer. Rounding out the lineup for the night, Phin is a newly formed Nashville band who despite their short time playing together are quickly catching the ears of music lovers, both in our fair Music City and beyond. Helmed by local singer-songwriter Toby Haydel, Phin is comprised of Trevecca Nazarene University students who have made large and quick strides this year, forming the band and cutting their first EP, Those Killers, which boasts a mature and well crafted sound.

Celebrate your long weekend in style this Sunday down at Cannery Row, for what is sure to be one of Cause A Scene’s most exciting and high energy shows of the season. Get your tickets here for $7. Doors open at 7:00 PM and the party starts at 8:00 PM.

Judah & The Lion

I learned something really early on in my friendship with Nashville’s newest Americana-folk buzz band, Judah & the Lion: When these guys play a show, people show up en masse. When I booked them for a showcase in January, I had no idea what to expect from the show. I had heard their first EP, First Fruits, and enjoyed it, and had heard buzz around Belmont’s campus, but on that warmer-than-usual mid-week night in January, nothing could have prepared me for the 250+ people that packed into Red Earth Trading Co’s pop-up shop in Hillsboro Village for an old-fashioned big tent revival. After curating nearly 30 shows over the first year of Cause A Scene, we had our fair share of bands play our shows. Judah & the Lion on that night seemed to transcend them all, with a sound and performance that made it seem impossible for that show to really be one of the very first shows they had ever played.

Since then, I’ve seen them garner quite a bit of attention and well-warranted praise from their latest EP, Sweet Tennessee, with the six-track album rising to #1 on iTunes Singer/Songwriter charts and breaking the Top 25 overall on the same platform. This week, Judah & the Lion released their brand-new video for the title track of the album, and it seems to simply reinforce the magic that this band has on stage and the fact that wherever this band plays, crowds tend to show up and fill the room. It’s a trend that shows no signs of changing anytime soon.

If you’re in Nashville, there’s a few chances to catch the band live, first at the Americana Music Festival in mid-September, again at Musician’s Corner in Centennial Park on October 12, and finally in November opening for Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors at the Cannery Ballroom. Something tells me that the vast majority of the fans and friends in this video will be at all three.

Neko Case Promo

Incubated in the Seattle punk rock scene, Neko Case founded and contributed to a diverse set of bands, most famously the New Pornographers, while building her solo career over five studio albums.  Each was a stylistic breakthrough, carried on Case’s truly unique vocals, culminating with 2009’s Grammy-nominated Middle Cyclone.

On her sixth album, The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You (September 3 via ANTI-), Case conveys rich autobiographical tales through a broad spectrum of styles: alt-country to pop, moody to clever, and sometimes downright hilarious.  A student of her past, she is able to articulate matters of her own heart that resonate on a universal level.

Case eschews her signature country noir on Man, a power pop anthem with a red-blooded Americana core.  A chiming Springsteen-esque jaunt kicks off this assertive gender commentary, bolstered by the gnashing guitars of M. Ward (She & Him).

If I’m dipshit drunk on pink perfume then I am the man in the fucking moon

Because you didn’t know what a man was until I showed you

Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, My Morning Jacket) helms aggressive production here but is able to scale back and capture Neko’s crystalline a cappella on Nearly Midnight In Honolulu.  Enjoy the depth, the humor, the sadness, and the wit of this album in heavy doses.  It might be one of your favorites of 2013. You can currently stream the album via Pitchfork here. If you’re in Nashville, be sure to catch her show at Cannery Ballroom on October 23.

CAS August 21 - Andrew Leahey - Web

Come out to the west side of town, just a mile or so from Hillsboro Village and Vanderbilt’s campus this Wednesday night for a lineup of folk and Americana acts perfect for an August evening in Tennessee. Classically trained, Andrew Leahey began his career singing in the Juilliard Chorale in NYC performing at venues like Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. Dissatisfied with classical music, Leahey headed to Michigan where he began to focus on songwriting. Now a resident of Nashville where he formed Andrew Leahey & the Homestead, Leahey has cultivated a sound that blends rock n’ roll, Americana and alt-country, creating a rich and authentic sound that echoes an authenticity that is rarely heard. It was while on tour between Nashville and Leahey’s native hometown of Richmond, VA that he found the inspiration for the band’s latest EP, Summer Sleeves, which released this past April. Mixed by David Barbe, who has produced albums for the likes of the Drive-By Truckers and Son Volt, Summer Sleeves is a stunning showcase of the talent that Andrew Leahey & the Homestead have to offer.

Also on the bill for the evening are folk musicians Tyler Anthony and Evan Ford. This Knoxville based duo, known as Cereus Bright, strives to make music that is rooted in simple melodies and anchored by their passionate harmonies and lyricism, and it is safe to say that they hit the mark. Having released their debut EP, Goldmine, only last November, the duo has spent the months since touring the greater Southeast with the sole goal to spread their music to all who care to listen. They will be doing just that this Wednesday as they make their second Cause A Scene appearance, and we at CAS can’t wait to welcome them back, and this time around they will be bringing their full band along with them.

Indie folk band Count This Penny will also be filling the Nashville air with their acoustic melodies this Wednesday. Located out of Madison, WI, Count This Penny has garnered a lot of buzz in only a few short years, having their national radio debut on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion. The trio also recorded and released both a full-length album and EP in 2012, the latter of which, titled From Paper to Iron, took the #6 spot on the iTunes singer-songwriter chart.

Local folk duo The Rough & Tumble, will complete the lineup and are sure to complement an evening of spectacular performances. The festivities will begin at 2803 Acklen Avenue at 8:00PM. Get your tickets here for $7 in advance. Tickets will be $10 at the door.

CAS August 17 - Jessica Frech

Clear your schedule this Saturday night for a lineup of unique and talented musicians. Jessica Frech is a folk pop artist and Nashville native who has been expertly using social media and internet mediums to spread her talents to a vast audience. Garnering viral buzz with the YouTube sensation “People of Walmart,” Frech has used social media platforms and her fan base thereof to launch a Kickstarter campaign to help bring the dream of her full length project Reality, to fruition.

Following suit in using modern mediums to expose one’s personal gifts is Michael Castro. Featured on season 8 of American Idol and brother of American Idol season 7 finalist, Jason Castro, Michael is a singer-songwriter and Nashville transplant from Dallas, TX, who is taking his talents beyond the television audience to the music gridiron, Music City. Castro has released 3 independent records and continually releases one original single each month via iTunes.

Also featured on the evening’s bill are two more Nashville transplants, the first of which is a Cause A Scene veteran, Rebecca Roubion. This indie-pop artist is making major headway, carving a name for herself in the Nashville music scene with a soulful, folk-infused sound. Roubion has recently released two EPs that complement each other as a sort of companion project, the first of which, Fields, released last fall and the second, Forests, this past spring. New York state native, Mark Vikingstad, will also be gifting us with his talents this Saturday. This singer-songwriter, having learned the guitar from a young age and having spent the last decade honing his songwriting skills, possesses a sound that is defined by feel good lyricism and upbeat acoustic melodies. Accompanied by a captivating live presence, Vikingstad is surely making his name known across Music City.

This spectacular night of talent will be going down at 1803 Blair Blvd. The doors open at 8:00PM and the music starts at 9:00PM. Get your tickets here for $7. Can’t make the show, but don’t want to miss out on this amazing lineup? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!
